The museum event centre was packed with art enthusiasts who eagerly took in the works on display. Painting, sculpture and photography were among the disciplines represented at this inaugural opening event. Historic act closes Merivale bridge Penny Wright, Anna Taylor, Nancy Tschetner

The Helmores Lane bridge will stay closed to cars after a “historic quirk” showed it has been used illegally for nearly 120 years. The bridge, which connects the Merivale side of Helmores Lane to Little Hagley Park, was closed to cars in 2011 due to earthquake

damage but stayed open to pedestrians and cyclists. The city council had been due to decide on whether to repair the bridge for cars after public consultation. But a closer look at the bridge’s history found it should have been closed to cars since 1895. City council staff told city

councillors last Thursday that the road had been officially closed for 119 years as part of an amendment to the Public Domains Act. The act made the Avon River, which the bridge crosses, the northern boundary of Hagley Park in 1985. Under the Reserves Act, roads

McMaster Heap Veterinary practice

PETS BATTLING CANCER A difficult subject and one where there are no guarantees of a successful outcome but I believe that pets deserve a chance at surviving cancer. It obviously depends on the patient and their overall health and the heavy commitment the client is willing to make in terms of time, vet visits and costs involved in treatment. I have personally been involved in treating cancer in my first dog, Toby, so I really know how tough and sad it can be living day in and day out with your best friend who is going through cancer treatment. From the time of diagnosis, I got 6 months longer with my best mate and that was so worth it for me. Toby was happy and seemingly well right up until the end, coming to work, exercising and interacting with other dogs as normal.

George

We seem to be so much better at diagnosing cancers now. Pet owners are more in tune with their loyal companions and they intuitively know when things are not right – slightly off food, a bulging belly, more lethargic, less keen to jump into the car and our clients seem expert at finding the smallest of lumps. We have a brilliant team of vets who are very proficient in diagnostics and they really strive to get answers. At the end of the day we really care and value the pets we see and treat. Most lumps will be aspirated and we can immediately check out the cells under the microscope. If in doubt we send the cytology to another laboratory for expert opinion. We routinely blood and urine test patients that are not quite right and we can have results in 30 minutes thanks to our onsite blood analysers. If required xrays and ultrasound examinations can be performed then and there, again with immediate results. We certainly don’t muck around. Once we have the classification and type of cancer we can form a plan of attack in treatment. Most cancers require surgical excision then rounds of chemotherapy to keep the cancer in remission. To formulate the best chemotherapy plan for your pet, we

consult with Veterinary Oncology Specialists in Australia, who will work out the drugs we need, the amounts given and how long we need to treat for. Our pets generally cope extremely well with chemotherapy. They are resilent and stoic and want to carry on as normal for us. The drugs do have side effects which in most cases can be managed but more often than not our chemotherapy patients feel and look better than before diagnosis. They don’t typically lose their coat, go off their food or vomit profusely like people do. Recently we had to put to sleep two very special, longstanding patients who had just come to the end of the road in cancer therapy. It is very important to realise when the time has come and often our pets are very good at conveying this to us. As veterinarians and owners, we have to really look at our patients and try to feel and see what they are trying to tell us. We need to realise when we have all done our best and when it is time to make that very hard, life changing decision. “George”, a very dapper, immaculately presented, handsome 11 year old American Cocker Spaniel was recently put to sleep after battling aggressive hemangiosarcoma for about 7 months. He had surgery back in December to remove the primary tumour which was in his spleen and then he underwent a few rounds of chemotherapy. George was a fantastic, courageous patient to treat and I know we gave him more precious, quality time with his doting owners. “Brandy”, a beautiful, kind 12 year old chocolate Labrador who was everyone’s friend, was also put to sleep recently after successfully battling stage 5 lymphoma for 2.5 years. She coped fantastically with all the needles, intravenous drips and drugs and you would never have known she had cancer. She actually looked forward to her visits as it meant Steve gave her liver treats which for Steve is a rare event. Both these patients will be sorely missed by us all at McMaster & Heap Vets and we want to thank the families involved in allowing us the chance to extend their time with these awesome dogs, hopefully with dignity, compassion and kindness. Cancer treatment isn’t for everyone but we think you owe your pet the chance to at least explore all the options. Whether it is surgery, chemotherapy, holistic or nutritional therapy, there is always “something” we can try. Feel free to contact us if more information is sought on this topic.

TROUBLED BRIDGE OVER WATER: The Helmores Lane bridge was used illegally by cars for nearly 120 years, the city council discovered last week. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN

Act forces bridge to close •From page 1 “It’s just weird, I haven’t seen anything like this in my time at council and I’m not sure I will again. It’s one of those odd historic quirks,” he said. Cr Gough said he did not know how the road had stayed open for so long, but it would now be permanently closed to cars. “All I know is the road had legally been stopped in the 1800s and they had not had it officially open to traffic,” he said. “There was an act in Parliament that didn’t allow it, but it was always used as a through road, but as it transpires, illegally.” Cr Gough said there was provision for the city council to ask the Government to make an exception for the road, but it would take years to come into effect.

The stretch of Helmores Lane on the Little Hagley Park side of the river would not have to be changed as it was “not technically a road unless it’s connected,” he said. The road on the other side of the river would now stay a dead-end for cars. The Fendalton-Waimairi and HagleyFerrymead Community Boards had both proposed to repair the bridge for car traffic before the historic revelation. Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck said the permanent closure would have a “very practical impact” for people getting in and out of the area. The repair of the bridge is estimated to cost $105,000, with the majority of funding coming from the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team.

Focus on Canty’s weather

‘CEREC’ & cosmetic dentistry

BY PAUL MCDONALD

A passion for weather could soon turn a profit for the student-run Canterbury Weather Updates Facebook page. The page began as the brainchild of Burnside High School student Josh Oliver, 17, who felt the need to provide a service specific to Canterbury during the freak storm which struck the region in June 2013. It has since attracted more than 40,000 followers. Josh gathered his information from Global Forecast System and Air Resource Laboratory graphs and interpreted them to reflect weather patterns in the region. He said although other weather services such as MetService were good, it was clear they were a Government forecast service and he wanted to create a personalised service specific to Canterbury. When the interest of the page exploded with more than 11,000 followers in one day, Josh recruited fellow weather enthusiasts, Russell Voice, 27, Michael Ford, 34, and Leighton Thomas, 26, to assist him with the day-today running of the service. The weather enthusiasts’ goal was to provide the most up-todate accurate forecast for the Canterbury region and with their new personalised updates system which would provide a specialised forecast service to cater the need of their clients.

WEATHERMAN: Burnside High School student Josh Oliver’s Canterbury Weather Updates is offering a personalised service for their followers.

Mr Voice, a student at Canterbury University, said that the initial interest in their new project had been strong, especially from businesses that required accurate weather updates at various times throughout the day, they would negotiate a price depending on their client’s need. “There is a real need for it and there is definitely a market for it.

decision not to go to university next year so I can set up the system properly,” he said. The pair hoped a website would be online by the end of the year. For all inquiries about Canterbury Weather Updates’ personalised weather service, you can contact them via email, weather. canterbury@gmail.com or phone 021 08589582.

Some people might need an update at 5.30am and we can provide that,” he said. Josh said the page had received a lot of positive feedback and interest and with a new business model he hoped it would turn into a full-time occupation if it generated enough revenue. “It has been hard with me at school and Russell at university, but I have made the educated

Tell me a little bit about your band. I’m 16 and so are the rest of the band members. We formed in intermediate, we all went to the same school but now half of us go to St Andrew’s and half go to Christchurch Boys’ High School. We’ve been competing at rockquest for four years in a row and have one more to go next year.

How did it feel winning the Canterbury Regional Smokefree Rockquest 2014 with your band The Haze? It was amazing; we’ve been doing it for four years so we were really glad to win it this year. Last year we got second and the year before that I won the APRA Lyric award, but it was great to finally win the ultimate title. We were a bit nervous because Zac our newest member had only played seven gigs with us before and the rest of us had played

about 70, but it turned out great! What did you get for winning? We won a $500 voucher from the New Zealand Rockshop so we are going to go and pick stuff out this weekend, we don’t really need anything in particular so we just pick out lots of little useful things. You also won the APRA Lyric award for the second time, where do you get your inspiration for your lyrics from? I often look to the bookcase to

young rockers Have you made your video submission to enter the SmokeFree Rockquest nationals yet? No, we’re making it this Sunday afternoon at the St Andrew’s theatre. We sent a video submission in last year as well but out of 50 submissions we got into the top 30 but unfortunately we didn’t get any further than that. Fingers crossed for this year! Do you think you will get in this time? Yea hopefully, that would be awesome. I think we have a better shot at getting it this year than last year. What will you do if you win nationals? It’s a long shot but if we did win that would be absolute ecstasy! Have you experienced any fame amongst your friends or school mates? Yea a little bit. We play a lot of live gigs like we played at the Pallet Pavilion, the A&P show and the lantern festival and we’re starting to get a little bit of a following which is cool, yea we’re definitely starting to get more recognised. Who are some of your role models? We love Led Zeppelin and we’re big fans of Guns ’N Roses, but we like a whole mix of styles. Our band is quite a mixture as well, like our drummer is into

metal, our bass player is into jazz and I’m into rock so that all influences our playing style and the songs we produce. Who came up with your band name The Haze? Well I’m not actually sure, we just kind of made it up a couple of years ago and it stuck. How many of the songs you play at gigs are covers v originals? We have about seven originals now but we started out just doing covers; a lot of rock songs our parents liked. What do your parents think of your success? They enjoy it, they really drove the band when we were 12 and just starting out. Where do you practise? We play at my place; luckily we have a set of electronic drums hooked up to head phones so it’s not too loud for the rest of the family. How did you get into music in the first place? I picked up singing when I was quite young because our family is quite musical. We have this wee traditional family guitar, that’s been handed down from generation to generation and we all kind of have a go on it. It’s a great little guitar. That’s what I started playing and taking guitar lessons on, and it just took off from there. Where do you hope the band

will take you in the future? Well at the moment it’s pretty tough while we are at school because we are really busy like the only times we get to practise now are Tuesdays and Sundays. But I hope we can carry it on in the future, I’d love to keep playing gigs and getting our name out there more and hopefully one day get some national success. Do you consider yourself a bit of a rock star? Uh a little bit haha, yea I would like to think that. Who has the biggest ego in your band? I do. Yup, it’s definitely me. I am the ‘bossy angry’ one but hey, look where it got us. What’s the worst part of becoming a rock star? The rest of our music class gives us a lot of flak for it. Do you get more interest from the girls now? Haha a little bit but not really. If not a musician, then what do you want to do when you grow up? Probably something to do with science and chemistry. Maybe become a chemical engineer. What university do you want to go to? Wellington or Auckland because Christchurch doesn’t really have that good of a music scene at the moment.

No nominations for vacant seat

Daily Specials!

Nominations for a new member of the Shirley-Papanui Community Board close this Thursday, but as of last Friday nobody had put their hand up. Deputy chairwoman Gemma Maslin stepped down at the start of the month for personal reasons. The vacant seat means a byelection will be held on August 29, with nominations to the electoral officer Clare Sullivan due by noon on July 3. “If there’s only one nomination, that nominee will be declared elected. If we don’t get any at all, the community board will determine by resolution an appointee to the board,” said Mrs Sullivan.

PAPANUI’S PAST

Trams and timetables BY MURRAY WILLIAMS, PAPANUI HERITAGE GROUP

The importance of the development of the tram in the process of Papanui’s journey from a relatively isolated village to becoming integrated into the growing city of Christchurch cannot be overstated. Originally the only direct link was Papanui Rd, which in the early years of the Canterbury settlement, was little more than a rough track for bullock carts. However, from 1880 the laying of tram tracks from Cathedral Square to the junction of Papanui, Harewood and the North Roads opened up the possibility of more efficient transport; the tram cars originally relied on horse power, then steam, and from 1905, the cleaner and more reliable electricity delivered via overhead power lines. The service meant that it was now viable for Papanui residents to commute into town and this possibility fuelled a building boom, especially in streets in easy walking distances to tram stops along Papanui Rd. The tram network was run by the Christchurch Tramway Board and Papanui residents were not reluctant to offer their advice as to how the service

RELIABLE: From 1905, electric trams provided viable transport from the city to Papanui.

could be improved. The Papanui Progress League, a local lobby group whose motto was ‘Advance Papanui’, represented these views. On August 4, 1926, the Secretary of the PPL, Stephen Cox, wrote to the board to ask if the service that left Papanui at 7.40am and arrived in the square at 7.56am could be altered so that the tram would arrive ‘about

five minutes earlier.’ In the same letter Cox also requested that the tram leaving the square at 5.12pm for Papanui should be an express, stopping only at Papanui and Northcote. In short, the league argued that Papanui commuters should be able to arrive at work on time without the need to make an undignified dash from the square, while also being able to get

home more quickly at the end of the day. The Tramways Board agreed to the first suggestion, but not the second, no doubt feeling that such a move would inconvenience as many customers as it favoured, for example, those who used the Mays Rd stop would be faced with a hike back down Papanui Rd; those disinclined to undertake this extra exercise would presumably have to wait for a later service. A year later, Mr Cox again wrote to the board and requested that ‘on Sunday mornings during the summer months, the tram should leave Northcote Rd about 9.30 to connect at the square with the two seaside services, Sumner and Brighton. ‘On the present timetable the best part of the day is gone before residents can reach either of these resorts.’ Unfortunately for the residents of Northcote, the board argued that even in summer, such a service would not be viable, as satisfactory patronage could not be guaranteed. The Northcote service was already far from profitable, and in fact was suspended in 1930; the Papanui service reverted to its original terminus at the top end of Papanui Rd. BY PAUL MCDONALD While most Christchurch bars remain closed to football enthusiasts eager to watch 4am World Cup matches, a group of Burnside fans have banded together to celebrate the beautiful game from the comfort of their living rooms. New Zealand Graduate School of Education student Ira Perkins, 26, started a Facebook page to create a place where people could banter about the football, compete in a betting pool and find a place to watch matches together. “Watching sport is a lot more fun when you have friends to watch it with,’’ Mr Perkins said. The group gathered most days to watch the football and although some matches drew bigger crowds, their attendance continued to grow as the competition moved closer to the final stages. “We have had about 10 for the big games and the most we have had is 12, it is definitely getting bigger as we go along.” Mr Perkins said alcohol played little to no part in their festivities and they were all getting to work and school on time. “There are a couple of keen university students watching matches at 4am, but we generally tape them and watch them later,’’ he said. He said this practice had been

difficult as they had to steer clear of social media and news sites to avoid spoiling the result. New Zealand’s absence at the World Cup was not a deterrent for the group and everyone involved had rallied behind a team to support. “One of the nicer things about New Zealand not being there is that it doesn’t really matter if your side doesn’t do well,’’ he said. Mr Perkins said even with the early exits of Spain and Eng-

land, no one had been knocked out of the betting pool so far, but categories such as “will there be an iconic musical instrument” had already been confirmed. “It is based on a points system, so I will know who has won the competition around the semifinal stage,’’ Mr Perkins said. Lawyer John-Luke Day, 27, said he had watched the majority of the games so far with the group and although he was disappointed about the

early exit of his beloved Englishmen, he loved the festivities associated with the World Cup. “I am really disappointed because I think that we had a really good team, but that is part of the English football heritage. Although I am disappointed now I won’t stay down-trodden for long,’’ he said. Mr Day said there was nothing like a World Cup to create banter amongst friends while watching some good football.

Villa Maria College’s Vivace choir and Collegium, a combined choir from Christ’s College and St Margaret’s College have been selected to compete in The Big Sing National Finale held at the Auckland Town Hall from August 21 to 23. The two choirs were the only two from Christchurch selected for the event alongside 22 other high school choirs from around the country. Villa Maria College development officer Judi Wilson said there was excitement in the air after the girls were named the best girls’ choir in the regional final held on June 5 and 6 and they were pleased to be selected for the prestigious event. “Burnside [High School] normally pip us in the final, but they haven’t made the final this year. All the girls are quite excited,” she said. She attributed the success of the group to choral director Ravil Atlas, an internationally-recognised leading opera tenor and vocal teacher. Mr Atlas said it was “very special” to be selected for the national finale and it was particularly satisfying this year as we are trying out a new programme of choirs at Villa Maria.

“Vivace is the new advanced choir. It is designed to be small and to emphasise advanced music and vocal techniques and to foster a sense of leadership in the girls. Each one, in addition to Vivace, is required to take on student leadership with one of the other choirs.” Mr Atlas said making the finale was a success within itself as there were many deserving choirs who did not make it. “It is always very special to be selected to the national finale. The atmosphere there is electric and to see the choirs support each other and to perform so well is what the choral singing is all about.” Christ’s College director of music and senior master Robert Aburn said the group was delighted to be selected for the finale and looked forward to working alongside St Margaret’s College as Collegium against some formidable choirs. “It’s all go for Auckland,” he said. St Margaret’s College performing arts head of faculty Amanda Woods said it was a huge achievement for the students too and was impressed with their achievements considering a heavy workload with productions.

EXCITED: Villa Maria College’s choir Vivace will compete alongside 23 other high school choirs at The Big Sing finale in August.

TOGETHER: Collegium the combined choir of Christ’s College and St Margaret’s College was one of the two Christchurch choirs selected for The Big Sing finale in August.

Surprise for shop owner BY FIONA THOMAS

A row of Redwood shops was the scene of an inconvenient crime last week, the theft of their door handles. Michelle Taylor, who owns Presence Gift Shop on Main North Rd, arrived at work on Monday morning to find herself locked out because her door handles were missing. “It’s bizarre, it’s a bit of nothing but when it happens to you it’s a pain in the neck,” she said. “I had to pay to get it fixed because I had to get into the shop.” But Ms Taylor’s shop was not the only target, she said all four shops in the row either had their door handles taken or unscrewed. “I definitely don’t think they were trying to break into the shops, I just think someone

YOUR CHILDREN ARE AMAZING ALREADY. WE JUST HELP THEM PROVE IT.

has been a bit bored,” she said. “They weren’t just thrown on the concrete, they were taken.” Ms Taylor said her shop was the only one with both back and front handles taken, while the other shops just had their back door handles taken. She said she thought the handles could have been taken for scrap metal. Annex Rd Metal manager Mike Black said brass door handles would be worth $5 per kilogram, which would be made up of “a few” handles. He said if they were cast aluminium they would be worth $1 a kilo. Ms Taylor spent $58 on buying new handles and had to factor in lost wages for the time spent installing them by a staff member from another store.

Microwave not the best place to warm nail polish

We are not hearing as much recently about arson fires in our empty homes, but they do trickle in. A two-storey house in Burwood had a stolen car parked in its garage last Friday which was then set on fire. Car, garage and house all damaged. There was a bit of a suggestion that someone was inside early on and this is where these fires become a real concern. I just dont want to hear how one of my colleagues has been injured searching for someone in a house that has been quite deliberately torched. The following night some clown set fire to hay in stables at the A&P Showgrounds. These dangerous morons are still around.

The buyers of a house in Bishopdale wondered why their first few power bills were so high. That was until they noticed smoke rising from a carpet last Friday morning. Attending fire crews found an underfloor heater grill had been covered over. Not so bad but the heater itself under the floor was still live, and operating. I suppose the silver lining will be lower electricity accounts. Finally, on Tuesday crews called by the operation of a detector at one of our boarding schools found the cause to be a bottle of nail polish being heated in a microwave. Now I can only presume from my position of male ignorance that this would be done to make the polish flow better. Whatever the reason, there was certainly one very red faced young lady.

Fibre broadband

lights up local homes

I

t’s been almost two years since local fibre network provider Enable launched its first mass-market fibre broadband services in Christchurch, and local residents have been taking up this next generation of broadband services faster than anyone in the country. When Enable launched on September 15, 2012, almost 5000 homes and businesses in Halswell could access faster, better quality broadband services delivered over fibre broadband. Today, almost 40,000 homes and thousands more businesses across Christchurch and in Rolleston and Lincoln can access Enable’s network. By mid-2015, this number will grow to about 80,000 homes and businesses. What’s most important is almost 10 per cent of these people have already chosen to move to fibre, and in some communities such as Rolleston and Halswell, the uptake is much higher. As Enable’s coverage has spread to more homes, Enable has discovered how hard it is to predict what sort of households will embrace and benefit from fibre broadband. “Before we launched our residential services, there were a number of assumptions floating around about who would benefit the most from fibre at home - the likes of gamers, very high internet users and people that work from

home,” says Enable GM Marketing and Sales Malcolm Campbell. “We learned pretty quickly that the groups that would benefit were much more diverse, and simple things like Skyping, downloading movies regularly or having a couple of teenagers online make fibre broadband a no-brainer.” Enable has researched the interest in fibre across its community and discovered that families are most likely to benefit from making the switch early on. This comes down to the number of internet devices in a home; once you get two or three people trying to access internet at the same time, fibre’s advantages become obvious. Alice Tan from Papanui has two teenage children at home and is a testament to this. She says, “We have a lot of connected devices at home and many of these are downloading or connected to the internet at the same time. Before we got fibre broadband, it was hard to do all the things we wanted online at the same time - this is no longer a problem.” Karl and Pam Moen are Rolleston retirees who depend on the internet to catch up with family overseas, and they have noticed the benefits of fibre broadband. Mr Moen says, “The quality with Skype on fibre is lovely. Our family in England and my daughter in Australia are now so clear and they say that the picture at their end is also better.”

Norton, Shaun Skilling, Georgia Surie, Brodie Thomas, Olivia Tutty, and Abby Williamson. They will be managed by Bill Boyd, Ann Gill and Maria Kilden. Club committee member Buzz Jones said the trip would be a once in a lifetime experience for some of these young people, many of whom have never been overseas before. He said that without an all-weather running surface in Christchurch at present, the opportunity provided by this trip could be the making of some of these athletes.

Dr Jefferies is delighted to welcome Dr Api Talemaitoga who is an experienced cosmetic physician and highly regarded general practitioner. Prior to joining Koru Clinic, he was practicing for many years at the Normans Road Surgery in Elmwood. Dr Api specialises in creating individual plans based upon a patient’s history, goals and time commitments. One of the most requested components is for facial rejuvenation, which uses injectable wrinkle treatments and dermal filler. Dr Api offers comprehensive skin and mole checks to be able to advise patients on the best and most effective ways to either have the spots and lesions monitored or removed. Media scrutiny seems to jump on and highlight poorly done dermal fill or antiwrinkle treatments to sensationalise the experience. “Fortunately, the specialty of cosmetic medicine has changed dramatically

in recent years”, says Dr Jefferies. “There has also been a swing away from larger ‘nurseled’ clinics to higher standard cosmetic physician–led clinics, which ensure quality and optimise outcomes by tailoring an individualised treatment. Treatment techniques have advanced and improved, and Dr Jefferies believes many people now simply want to have a more ‘youthful and refreshed’ look, rather than looking like they have ‘had work done’.” New Zealand best practises require specific educational qualifications before doctors can perform these treatments and skills on patients. An intensive New Zealand training programme for cosmetic medicine doctors ensures the highest standards of treatment and care from cosmetic physicians practicing throughout the country. Dr Api shares the importance of the initial consultation and health assessment before any treatment actually starts. “This is mandatory at the Koru Clinic to best understand what our patient wants, and we then discuss the options to achieve that.” Treatments performed today by cosmetic

Curiosity drives learning at Tamariki School

rden,11, has recently developed an interest in crystals. Bismuth is a particular favourite because of its extraordinary colours and its spiral, stair-stepped shapes. Arden has been using the biological microscope at Tamariki School to inspect pieces of bismuth, pyrite and obsidian – crystals that he has bought for himself. He has learnt to control the various settings on the microscope to alter the focus, magnification and angle, so that the fine details of these crystals can be viewed. He is complementing this experience with online research and through reading reference books. Given Arden’s enthusiasm for crystals, it has been easy for him to share what he is learning with others and this has inspired other children to take a look through the microscope. At Tamariki School, the natural curiosity of each child is valued and they are encouraged to spend their time exploring activities and learning that has particular relevance and interest to them. Given free reign, a child’s curiosity will take them on a largely enjoyable journey to absorb new information, and to develop skills and attributes such as planning, persistence, patience and problem solving. When children enjoy what they are doing, their learning is more likely to be deep and fulfilling, and they are more likely to take the next steps to progress, or will have the confidence to tackle something new. The educational philosophy of Tamariki School aligns with Self-determination theory (SDT), and the school provides a framework that supports the human needs, identified by SDT, of competency, relatedness and autonomy. Children at Tamariki are given the opportunity to experience ‘intrinsic motivation’ - the drive to seek out challenges and new possibilities that SDT associates with cognitive and social development. At Tamariki, we provide an environment where children can be their most creative, innovative,

Arden examines his crystals under a biological microscope adaptive and imaginative. On any given day, children will be engaged in a wide range of activities, conversations or projects, for example; hut building, reading, painting a new flag, baking, designing a board game, doing math, researching crystals and playing tyre tag.

FOOD Cover the dish with tinfoil and place in a preheated oven at 130 deg C for 3 hours. Now they are ready to bury among the beans in your cassoulet. Second job is the cassoulet. Dice the pork belly and bacon, then cut sausage into 1cm-thick slices. Drain the soaked beans and discard the water. Put beans in a large saucepan, add pork and bacon and cover with fresh cold water. Bring to the boil and blanch for 20 minutes, then drain and discard cooking water. Roughly chop the celery, onion and carrot. Peel garlic cloves but leave them whole. Cut the tomatoes into wedges. Preheat oven to 100 deg C. Heat the olive oil in a large flameproof casserole dish and sweat the vegetables for 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes and bouquet garni and cook slowly until caramelised, probably another 5-6 minutes. Add the sausage, beans, pork belly and bacon and pour in about 1.2 litres of water. Bring to the boil, then add salt and pepper, cloves of garlic and lemon juice. It is a good idea to skim off the scum as it rises to the top. Transfer casserole to the oven and cook uncovered for 2 hours, stirring occasionally. You may need to cook a little longer—as long as the beans are soft and creamy in texture. Remove the cassoulet from the oven and bury the duck legs in the beans and sprinkle olive oil, breadcrumbs over. Return to the oven and cook two more hours. Serve in bowls, sprinkled with chopped parsley. Look out for those whole garlic cloves and mash them into the beans and sauce. Serve with good quality French bread.

INGREDIENTS 50g Almonds 1 splash Vegetable oil ½ tsp Salt ½ tsp Sugar 200g Green beans, tips removed 2 Courgettes 1 Granny smith apple 1 Lemon 2 cloves Garlic, crushed ½ cup Mayonnaise 1 Spring onion, 2 if small DIRECTIONS Heat a small frying pan to toast the almonds. Add a splash of oil. Lightly toast the almonds. Season with flaky salt. Remove from the pan and cool. Heat a pot of water to blanch the beans. Add salt and sugar to the water; this helps to heighten the green colour of the beans. When water reaches a rolling boil, add the beans. Cover with a lid and cook for 3-4 minutes. Drain in a sink with cold running water and ice if you have it. Remove from the water when cool, and drain. Slice the spring onions and courgettes on an angle and place in a large bowl. Cut the apple into quarters, core and slice thinly. Place in a separate bowl and drizzle with lemon juice and flaky sea salt. Mix through then add to the vegetables. Stir garlic through the mayonnaise and add to the vegetables. With your hands, gently lift the vegetables to coat with mayonnaise.

ason Jones took a risk when he overhauled his career, but it has paid off with him excelling in his new career with one of Christchurch’s top surveying and engineering firms. Jones, 32, had been working as a chef for many years, having previously completed a hospitality qualification at CPIT, but decided he wanted a career change. He started studying a marketing diploma at CPIT in 2008, but soon cross-credited it to the new Bachelor of Applied Management when the new qualification was introduced. Jason liked the well-rounded business knowledge the new degree offered, meaning that the degree could be applied across a number of industries. “The degree is so flexible. That’s one of the best things about it. I have changed my major from Sales and Marketing to Project Management with ease when I changed jobs.”

Jones started at Eliot Sinclair, a survey, engineering and planning consultancy, continuing to study part-time. “I started as a surveying assistant, which was pretty much at the bottom. However, as I have learnt more through my study, I’ve been able to apply it to my work and take on a new role with more responsibility,” he says. “I have found the degree useful because it was all really practical knowledge. Everything I’ve learnt has helped me directly in my job.” Due to the proven results they can see, Eliot Sinclair have been very supportive of his training, Jones says. “It’s been great because I have been able to fit it in around my work. CPIT is really flexible with their hours; they have night classes and summer schools as well. You have a lot of options if this is something you’re interested in.”

lisha Rollinson had only just left school when she decided to take her dream career further and look into study options for early childhood. “I had attended a food safety course that my workplace had put me through which was held at the Aoraki Polytechnic and I loved the environment,” says Alisha. “I found a course that took my interest that had a mid-year start. I enrolled and completed the Certificate in Parenting and Care of Children and then went on to further my studies by enrolling in the Certificate in Early Childhood Studies.” Alisha says her studies were so relevant to the early childhood industry, covering everything from having the ability to communicate effectively with children, having

knowledge and skills in an early childhood sector, understanding children’s basic needs, understanding their behaviours and having an understanding of the early childhood curriculum - Te Whariki. “I love that we go out on placement - getting experience in an early childhood centre and learning from that environment. We have fun while learning and the polytechnic is an awesome environment to learn in.”

hen a friend recommended Jonathan Milne’s book Go! The Art of Change to Anne Bannock, she looked into studying at The Learning Connexion - the school of art and creativity based in Wellington which Jonathan founded and directs. She realised that its studyfrom-home part-time option suited her down to a tee. “My life-long ambition was to go to an art school and to be part of the creative energy that goes with it,” says Anne. “To enter a new world of understanding modern art and new ideas.” Situated in picturesque Ngatimoti, artist Anne has made a studio retreat that caters to her creativity

and to the public. “My studio is a converted cow shed which serves as my studio and gallery, and is open to the public in the summer.” The Advanced Diploma programme has been the best programme of study for Anne to follow, allowing her to discover new techniques and skills to add to her extensive creative repertoire. “Everyone I have met has been helpful, especially the tutors. I have met some students when I attended a block class and now I follow their progress via the magic of the workroom, TLC’s online student forum.” If you’d like to enquire about studying at The Learning Connexion School of Art and Creativity, call us on 0800 278 769, or email us at admissions@tlc.ac.nz.

Helping to achieve your goals A Christchurch Academy qualification in Pharmacy Assistant Level 3 can open a lot of doors. “Many of our graduates go on to train with us to be dispensary technicians; others find work in the retail side of pharmacy. Some even have the opportunity to become managers,” says tutor Barbara Colville. “That’s because the course covers everything from human anatomy and over-the-counter medicines to photography and cosmetology. And there’s a strong emphasis on customer service, too.” Seventeen-year-old Jaimee hopes that the qualification will lead her to a career running a beauty counter in a pharmacy. She left Middleton Grange School last

year with NCEA Levels 1 and 2 and an Excellence endorsement in Art at Level 1, and thanks to the careers team there, found out about the academy. She knew she wanted to have a job that would let her help people, and she has “always loved going into pharmacies as they are really friendly environments it inspired me to do this course.” As well as the theory, Jaimee does one day a week of work experience at a pharmacy which has helped her to build her confidence and meet new people. And best of all, because she qualifies for Youth Guarantee, the course is free for her. Colville is certain that when she graduates later this year, Jaimee will be more than ready to take her first steps towards achieving her dream.

a rigorous and creative curriculum

Shirley Boys’ education is exciting, fulfilling and broad. Both present-day and prospective students will be involved in a new and unique era in the school’s history as it looks to be rebuilt on a new site next to Avonside Girls’ High School. Shirley Boys’ challenges young men to strive for personal growth through a rigorous and creative curriculum and an extensive co-curricular program. The findings of a recent NZCER (New Zealand Council for Educational Research) report, which analysed achievement in state secondary boys’ schools and explored the strategies used by top performing schools, clearly compliments Shirleys’ holistic approach. Analysis between 2010 and 2012 showed school leavers from state boys’ schools had higher qualifications than their male counterparts from state coeducational schools.

“What was really interesting was how the high-performing schools stressed the importance of a student-centred approach, offering co-curricular activities alongside academic programmes for holistic development and developing selfmanaging students who set high goals for themselves.” -

or five senior students from Marian College, the opportunity to be part of an exchange trip to Japan was “the trip of a lifetime”. The students, together with Principal Ms Anna Heffernan and Head of Languages at Marian Mrs Sarah Lake, travelled to Japan recently as part of the two-yearly Five Schools Exchange that includes schools from New Zealand, Australia and China and were hosted this time by Toho Senior High School in Nagoya. For the Marian students, the two-week trip was “an amazing experience”, with many highlights including a ceremonial welcome, visiting a Shinto shrine and a Buddhist temple, a three-day stay in the alps, dressing in a kimono and trying kendo and karate. Year 11 student Petra McGurk was the third member of her family to take part in the exchange that was started in the 1990s, and says, “It was fantastic to spend time with people, talking with them and getting to know their stories. We were immersed in the Japanese culture and had the chance to make so many friendships as well.” Another emphasis of the exchange was on World Heritage sites. Marian students presented on the application for Tekapo Dark Sky Reserve to be one, the impacts on it and how it can be sustained in the future. “The trip made us realise that although the students were from different countries, we can work together to protect our most important places,” says Petra.

ute as a button and underpinned by a certainly very popular location close to Rugby Park and on the fringe of Merivale, you’re only a short distance to cafés, bars and the shopping precinct. With what I would regard as an entry level opportunity to this location, I believe with the pending EQC repairs to be completed and a little vision, you can turn a great house into a fantastic home! Complete with three double bedrooms and two living spaces both on the north side of the house, all the boxes here should be ticked. Having lived with the family in the home for several years, a job up north means it’s time to sell. So grab the ball and run with it - there is a try looming right under the posts on or before Auction Day! Open Home dates: Sunday, June 29, or Sunday, July 6, 2pm to 2.30pm. MOTORING

Turbo Barina Holden’s hot hatch This time a year ago I was on holiday in Florida. During the time I was there, an acquaintance asked me to look at her brand new Chevrolet Aveo. When I saw that car I said: “Oh, it’s a Holden Barina.’’ Of course, the woman had no idea that was I talking about a car brand that is marketed down under, Holden isn’t sold in the United States, her Chevrolet is badged for the US market from its South Korean origins. The Barina here is manufactured in South Korea and is a well established small car player in the New Zealand market. Capitalising on the resurgence of the hot hatchback market in New Zealand, Holden has just released a sporty RS specification Barina and it gets the 1.4-litre turbocharged engine from the Holden Cruze. I’m so pleased this engine has been made available for other applications, it is my favourite within the Cruze range and in the lighter Barina it is a real honey in terms of performance, economy and outright driveability. The Barina RS also gets some special cosmetic treatment, exterior and interior, along with a suspension upgrade which connects the car tighter with the road. The spring and damper rates have been given a bit of firming, not so

hard that the ride is uncomfortable, far from it, but there is an underlying feeling that lets the driver know he or she is in for a sporty drive. And the Barina looks the part with its big exhaust, spoiler and body kit and leather/suede trimmed sport style seats with RS embossed on the backrests. Other interior features are pretty much standard Barina fare, the digital dash display is part of the Barina’s youthful make-up and fits well with RS spec. Under the bonnet sits the turbocharged four-cylinder, twin-camshaft engine which I rate highly for its honesty. It doesn’t have huge power outputs but at 103kW and 200Nm it is quite feisty and it doesn’t have to work hard to push the lightweight RS at just 1275kg. And torque is plentiful, maximum mid-range power is available from just 1850rpm and peak power is achieved at a lowly 4900rpm, very low outputs which not only encourage healthy midrange performance but also economy. The Barina RS isn’t punchy but it is forceful under accelera-

Price: Holden Barina RS, $23,190. Dimensions: Length, 4039mm; width, 1735mm; height, 1511mm. Configuration: Four-cylinder transverse, front-wheel-drive, 1364cc, 103kW, 200Nm, sixspeed automatic. Performance: 0-100km/h,

YOUTHFUL: Big wheels and body kit give the Holden Barina RS a sporty look to match its performance.

tion. Against the stopwatch it will scorch to 100km/h from a standstill in 8.8sec and will complete a highway overtake (80km/h to 120km/h) in a quick 5.2sec. It performs with an encouraging feel beneath the accelerator, the engine is lively, zingy and responsive. The test car was fitted with automatic transmission, the six-speeder has ratios which encourage lively engine behaviour, and as much as I would prefer the manual model, the automatic will be the choice for those who like spirited performance without having to work hard to achieve it. And if you aren’t pushing hard the 1364cc engine will achieve

respectable fuel usage figures. Holden claim a 6.5-litre per 100km/h (44mpg) figure which was almost matched by my 8l/100km (35mpg) trip computer average. At 100km/h the engine spins slowly at just 2100rpm and will sip fuel at the rate of just 6l/100km (47mpg). This mixture of performance and economy is quite remarkable and reinforces my desire for the engine, it is a real gem and I know I’m not the only motoring journalist who favours it. The Barina’s under bonnet performance is matched as well by the chassis. Even though the rear suspension is a simplistic beam

axle arrangement it is located well with coil springs and damper rates which control well body movement in a corner and accepts the big hits when uneven surfaces are encountered. The combination of power and handling is delightful, the Barina scorches from corner to corner and accepts a cornering challenge with aplomb. The Barina RS is certainly an accomplished hot hatch, it is a fun car and one which is very eager to please. It could also be termed a good value sports car, it lists at $20,990 in manual form and $23,190 for the auto (both sixspeeders). I have to say that if I was a hot hatchback buyer I’d be tempted at that price, it would be a toss-up between it and the Suzuki Swift Sport. However, the Barina RS with its greater power outputs and turbocharger might just win the day.
